Exploring the Greater Mekong Sub-region by self drive overland in Asean countries

You want to be the first team pioneering from Vietnam to conquer the exciting journey start from Vietnam – Cambodia – Thailand – Myanmar – India – Bhutan – Nepal via land road ???

Ho Chi Minh – Phnom Penh - Bangkok – Maesot – Myaddy – Phyu – Monywa – Kalay – Tamu – Moreh – Imphal – Kohima – Guwahati – Gelephu -  Siliguri – Badibas – Katmandu – Pokhara – Lumpini – Varanasi – Patna – Jalpaiguri – Guwahati – Kohima –Tamu – Moreh – Bagan – Bago – Myawaddy – Maesot – Bangkok




-          Arrive in late afternoon at Poipet , border formality cross to Aran

D2/   18-Oct   ARAN – MAESOT (670 KMS)

-          B’fast and morning drive to Maesot with lunch en route

-          Check in hotel ,dinner and overnight at Maesot

D3/   19-Oct   MEA SOT – MYAWADDY – PHYU (483 KMS)

-          B’fast at hotel and depart to border for border crossing formality

-          Our Myanmar  team will meet your group at Myawaddy check point in the morning and check in at immigration office. Start drive from Myawaddy (64km) drive to Kawkayeik, then drive again (94km) drive to Hpa an (stop one hour for lunch).

-          Hpa-An is the capital of Karen State (also known as Kayin State), the largest and most populated city in Karen State. Before arrive Hpa-an, you can start to see Zwegabin Hill is an attractive place for visitors. Kyaukkalatt Monastery, Kawtgon Cave and BayintNyi cave is also a place of interest. So if we have time, can visit this caves ( bcoz we rush drive to Phyu).

-          After Lunch,   (120km) drive to Kyaikhto, 75km drive to Payagyi and 130 km drive to  Phyu (115 Mile  rest camp).

-          Dinner and overnight at 115 Mile Traveller’s Inn ( Phyu).

-          Driving distance is 520 km, Driving time will be approximately 9hrs at least


D4/   20-Oct   PHYU - MANDALAY (522 KMS)

D5/   21-Oct   MANDALAY – KALAY  (349 KMS)

D6/   22-Oct KALAY - TAMU (149 KMS) – MOREH

-          Enjoy your breakfast at hotel, and then proceed drive to Tamu. Arrive Tamu Border, have lunch. Then carried out border formalities and cross to Tamu checkpoint.

-          Driving distance is 149 km, Driving time will be approximately 4 hrs.,

-          After border formalities cross to INDIA

-          Cross the India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge to enter India via Moreh town. A smalldrive will lead to Imphal the capital city of Manipur state. Spend the rest of the day exploring Imphal.

Kangla Fort

-          You can visit the Kangla Fort, the ancient capital of Manipur kingdom. It is also the most important historical and archaeological sites in Manipur.

-          The history, beliefs and origins of theMeiteis revolve around this. There aremany religious and historical places tosee at Kangla. A visit to Kangla will giveone a good knowledge of the State,which is always a good thing for travellers

Ima Market

-          Or shop at ImaMarket,the country’s biggest allwomen run market in Imphal. You can get anything from traditional handloom clothes to vegetables. The energy is amazing.  Visiting this is one of the best ways to get a good idea of the food culture in Manipur.

Loktak Lake

-          If you can make time, visit Loktak Lake, the largest fresh water lake in India, and the only floating lake in the world. It is also home to the Sangai, an endangered animal. The Loktak Lake is known for phumdis, a floating mass where people built their houses on. Loktak Lake can be best viewed from the sky and from peak of many islands dispersed in the lake. It is around 52.2 kms from Imphal and just more than an hour journey from Imphal

D7/   23-Oct  MOREHIMPHAL (110KMS)

D8/   24-Oct                IMPHAL – KOHIMA (145 KMS)

-          Imphal to Kohima is a hard 6 hour drive along the hills due to bad road conditions. You will cross the town of Senapati, that lies on the border of Manipur and Nagaland, serving as the perfect tea/snack stop.

War Cemetery

-          There’s plenty to do in Kohima. Almost everyone coming to Kohima cannot pass without visiting the War Cemetary there. This immaculate cemetery contains the graves of 1400 British, Commonwealth and Indian soldiers laid out across stepped and manicured lawns. It stands at the strategic junction of the Dimapur and Imphal roads, a site that saw intense fighting against the Japanese during one 64-day battlein WWII. From the cemetery, you can get the glimpse of the whole town.


-          Dream Café, a restaurant opposite the cemetery is a great place for both lunch andsnacks (a few spots with wifi in the town).

Heritage Village

-          Situated about 20kms from Kohima city, Kimasa Heritage Village is a place whereyou can find it all. The Heritage Village is designed in a traditional fashion to keepthe Naga Village alive and showcases the cultures of all different Naga tribes. Thecomplex also has the World War II museum with artifacts from the time.

-          Kimasa village is the main sight for the Hornbill Festival (1-5 December) when youcan catch up all the cultural programs and see the old tribal traditions come to life. Itattracts both national and foreign tourist and booking for hotels during Hornbillfestival starts as early as September.

D9/   25-Oct    KOHIMA -  GUWAHATI (360KMS)  8 Hrs.

-          Start your day in the hills and slowly descend to the Brahmaputra planes as you approach Guwahati.


-          Spend the evening exploring Guwahati.

-          Guwahati will give you a true sense of a modern Indian city, with bustling crowds,malls and multi-cultural crowd.

Umananda Temple

-          Take a boat ride to Umananda Temple. The temple complex sits on a small forested river island, accessed by a 15-minute ride on a ferry from KachariGhat, which itself offers attractive afternoon river views.

Assam State Museum Housed

-           in an imposing colonial-era building, this museum has a large sculpture collection, with the upper floors being devoted to informative tribal culture displays. In the anthropological galleries,you can walk through reconstructed tribal homes that give a glimpse into everyday rural life.

Kaziranga National Park (option is to decide to add an additional day)

-          For a day’s excursion,drive to Kaziranga National Park and back. A world heritage sight, the park hosts two-thirds of the world’s Great One hornedrhinoceros.

-          Kaziranga also boasts the highest density of tigers among the protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006.

-          Though sighting of tigers are difficult because of the tall grasses that provide

-          excellent camouflage, their presence can be felt everywhere by way of pug marks,kills and territorial markings. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer.


10/   26-Oct     GUWAHATI -  GELEPHU (245KMS) 7.5 Hrs. BHUTAN

-          Drive from Guwahati to Gelephu…the border town of Bhutan. This is our night halt too. BHUTAN GELEPHU (border town)

Bhutan Centennial Distillery

-          This distillery set up for the Army welfare has now become Bhutan’s main supplier of alcohol. The Distillery makes some fine whiskey, rum and gin including single Malt. You can do a tour of the factory to view the process ofwhiskey making and a chance to buy the local products.


D11/   27-Oct GELEPHU - THIMPHU (250KMS) 6 Hrs. BHUTAN

-          Visit the distillery if you like and complete any border formalities remaining

-          (incase you were late at the border the evening before). Today you drive toPunakha to send the night on the bank of the river Mo Chu.



-          A picturesque Dzong set high up in the hills. This town would also provide as the lunch halt along route.


-          PunakhaDzong The PunakhaDzong, also known as PungtangDechenPhotrangDzong (meaning "the palace of great happiness or bliss", is theadministrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan.

-          Constructed by NgawangNamgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, in 1637–38,it is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures.Thedzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the RangjungKasarpani and the sacred remains of NgawangNamgyal and the tertönPemaLingpa. White Water Rafting Enjoy a morning of rafting on the Mo Chu River past the Dzong right to the banks of the Damchenhotel.possible adding activities

D12/   28-Oct  THIM PHU - PUNAKHA - THIMPHU(90KMS)  3.5 Hrs.

-          Visit the Dzong in the morning and post that start your drive up to Thimpu- thecapital of Bhutan. (option you can leave later in the day for Thimpu and go rafting inthe morning and post that visit the Dzong)

-          ENROUTE FROM PUNAKHA TO THIMPHU Possible tea or lunch haltDochula PassAt an elevation of 3100 mts is the Dochulapass which houses 108 memorial chortensor stupas known as "DrukWangyalChortens" have been built by AshiDorjiWangmoWangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother . On a clear day one also gets abeautiful view of the Eastern Himalayas and Mt. Masanggang in particular.

D13/   29-Oct  EXPLORE THIMPHU/day trip to PARO (1.5 Hrs on way)

-          Spend the day exploring Thimpu or do a day trip to Paro to hike to Tigers Nest

-          THIMPU Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, occupies a valley in the country’s western interior.In addition to being the government seat, the city is known for its Buddhist sites. The massive TashichhoDzong is a fortified monastery and government palace with gold-leaf roofs. The Memorial Chorten, a whitewashed structure with a gold spire, is a revered Buddhist shrine dedicated to Bhutan’s third king, JigmeDorjiWangchuck

-          The capital city has lots to offer so pick according to your interest You could also do a day trip to Paro and hike up to Tigers Nest Monastery(1.5 hr drive from Thimpu one way)

D14/   30-Oct  THIMPHUSILIGURI  (340KMS) 10.5 Hrs.INDIA

-          Drive into India back again today and spend the night at Siliguri. Today is a long driving day with a border crossing too.INDIA SILIGURI

-          Today would be a long driving day. Drive from the Thimpu to Siliguri via the border town of Phuentsholing

-          ENROUTE FROM PHEUNTSHOLING TO SILIGURI When you’re about to reach Siliguri, be sure to stop at Coronation Bridge (locally know as SevokeBridge), a classic example to British engineering in India. It offers apicturesque view of Teestariver and is great spot to take pictures.

D15/   31-Oct  SILIGURI- BARDIDAS (305KMS) 9.5 Hrs. NEPAL

-          Cross over from India into Nepal and spend the night in Bardibas. This a small localtown with basic accommodation. Take some rest in the evening.

-          NEPALBARDIBASA small town in Nepal, just to break the journey on an extremely long drive to thecapital Kathmandu.

D16/   01-Nov BARDIDAS - KATHMANDU (200KMS) 5 Hrs.

-          Today we are at the capital of Nepal-Kathmandu. A town with both modern and old world’s charm. Spend the evening explore Kathmandu. Option to also spend one additional day here

-          KATHMANDU Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, is a vibrant, noisy city. Packed fullof history, palaces and temples, it is also within touching distance of Nepal's premier attraction, the Himalaya.

D17/  02-Oct   KATHMANDU - POKHARA (210KMS) 5.5 Hrs.

-          Today’s destination is Pokhara. What a wonderful sight awaits you at the lake.

-          Go for a boat rider. Spend the evening in town at one of the lively touristRestaurants POKHARA Phewa Tal is the travellers’ focal point in Pokhara,and is the second largest lake in Nepal. The steep southwestern shore isdensely forested and alive with birdlife. The lush Rani Ban, or Queen’s Forest, bestows an emerald hue to the lake, and on a clear day, the Annapurna mountains are perfectly reflected on its mirror surface.

-          You can take to the lake in one of the brightly painted doongas (boats) available for rent at Lakeside. One can also rent cycles or the trek up to the World Peace Pagoda affords breathtaking views over the tal to the mountains beyond.

D18/   03-Nov POKHARA – LUMBINI  (170KMS) 5 Hrs.

-          LUMBINI Lumbini- The birth place of Buddha is todays night halt Maya Devi Temple This temple sits on the site of the Buddha's birth. The sacred pondbeside the temple is believed to be where Maya Devi bathed beforegiving birth to the Buddha.

-          The World Peace Pagoda was constructed by Japanese Buddhists at a cost of US$1 million. The shining golden statue depicts the Buddha in the posture heassumed when he was born Lumbini Crane Sanctuary

-          The wetlands surrounding the World Peace Pagoda are protected as a cranesanctuary and you stand a good chance of seeing rare sarus cranes stalkingthrough the fields.

D19/   04-Nov LUMBINI – VARANASI (320KMS) 10 Hrs. INDIA

-          Cross back into India and visit one of our holiest cities. Sit by the Ganga river.

-          Walk the narrow chaotic streets. Border crossing long day (option of adding an additional day here) INDIA VARANASI KashiVishwanath Temple Standing on the western bank of India's holiest river Ganges, Varanasi is the oldest surviving city of the world and the cultural capital of India. It is in the heartof this city that there stands in its fullest majesty the KashiVishwanath Temple in which is enshrined the Jyotirlinga of Shiva, Vishweshwara or Vishwanatha. Here gravitate the teeming millions of India to seek benediction and spiritual peace by the darshan of this Jyotirlinga which confers liberation from the bondages of maya and the inexorable entanglements of the world.

-          The evening prayer of the Ganges is the most grandeur of prayers in the country. 5 priest,hundreds of oil lamps,countless bells and thousands of people from all across the world sit on the riverbank to visit the ceremony whichis nothing less than a religious concert. It is one thing in Varanasi you do not want to miss.

D20/   05-Nov  VARANASI –PA TNA (280KMS)  8Hrs.INDIA

-          Spend the evening exploring the town on the riverbank. PATNA

-          Patna Museum Housed in a majestic heritage building, this museum contains a splendid collection of Mauryan and Gupta stone sculptures, some beautiful bronze Buddhist statuary, 2000-year-old terracotta figurines and a gallery of wonderful Rajasthani miniatures. Don't miss thefabulous collection of Tibetan  thangkas (scroll paintings) brought to India by the scholar and traveller Rahul Sankrityayan in the early 20th century. Buddha Smriti Park This 9-hectare park, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010, is notable for its massive sandblasted charcoal Stupa, which houses a unique bulletproof chamber inside; andsapling plantings from both the Bodhi Tree in Bodhgaya and Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. There is also a strikingly modern Buddhist museum, a library and a meditation centre

D21/   06-Nov  PATNA – JALPAIGURI (500KMS) 9.5Hrs

-          Head eastwards, as you begin your return journey. Be prepared to come acrossall types of vehicles on the state highways. 

D22/   07-Nov  JALPAIGURI – GUWAHATI (400KMS) 11Hrs

-          This is a very long drivingday.Drive eastwards on NH27, toreenter Assam. Drive on the part of India sandwiched between Bhutan andBangladesh. 

D23/   08-Nov  GUWAHATI – KOHIMA (360KMS) 13Hrs

-          This is a very long driving day, on not veryfavourable road conditions, so an earlystart is recommended. Choose betweenDimapurorKohima as your lunch spot.Prepare to both ascend and descend whendriving from Kohima to Imphal. 

D24/  09-Nov  KOHIMA – MOREH (110KMS) 3.5Hrs  – TAMU –KALAY (149KMS) 5Hrs

-          Morning drive to Moreh-  Tamu border town between India and Myanmar

-          After formalities borders cross , convoy driving  distance is 149 km,

-          Driving time will be approximately 5hrs at least

-          Our Myanmar team will meet your group at Tamu Border check point in the morning and check in at immigration office. Start drive from Kalay and on the way stop for lunch. Then drive to Kalayand  dinner and overnight at Kalay, Taungzalatt Hotel**.

-          Kalaymyo lies in a rustic part of Sagaing Division. Kyauk Ta Lone (meaning ‘One Rock’ in English) is a swimming area set in a beautiful valley to the west of Kalaymyo, 1 km from Kalay. RihLake , drive to two and half hours’ drive to the west of the Kalaymyo. During the Second World War, these mountains saw a large amount of fighting between the Japanese and British as the latter withdrew from Burma in 1942, and just downhill from Wuthering Heights are the remains of a military outpost called Fort White; only some bricks remain set down from the road. 

D25/   10-Nov KALAY – MONYWA  (487KMS) 9.30     

-          Early leave at 7:00 am, 150km   drive to Gangaw. Then 184 km to Bagan.On the way, stop for lunch. Then continue drive to Bagan.

-          Stay overnight at Floral Breeze Hotel Bagan***

-          Driving distance is 415 km, Driving time will be approximately 9:30 hrs.

-          Ground situation is most of area is flat and dried, 

D26/   11-Nov MONYWA – BAGAN

D27/   12-Nov BAGAN

-          SightseeIng area is 40 sqr miles widely,Sightseeing time will be the whole full day, Ground experiences will be Pagodas and Temples and some handicraft and lacquer wear workshops,

-          After the breakfast, sightseeing to Arnandar temple, htelominlo temple, Gubyaukgyeetemple,Thut bin nyu, and shwegugyeepaya, lacquer wear shop, Buupaya,sularmani temple, Manuharpaya,Mingalarceti group of pagoda, law kanandar, Pyathatdar Temple, BuuPaya and nearby pagodas (Boat harbor), flowing on the River Ayeyarwaddy and feel Bagan sunset is final.

-          Stay overnight at Floral Breeze Hotel Bagan***

D28/   13-Nov BAGAN – BAGO (568 KMS) 9Hts

-          Early leave at 7:00 am drive to Naypyitaw (330 km) and stop for lunch.Nay Pyi Taw is the administrative capital of the Union of Myanmar. Interesting places are Uppatasanti Pagoda, The Hluttaw (Parliament) and having lunch.

-          Then continue drive to Bago (is one of the major historical cities in Myanmar as it was the capital of the second Myanmar Empire). Arrive Bago, visit ShwemawdawPagoda( one of the largest pagodas in the country and almost as famous as the Great Shwedagon), Kyaik Pun Pagoda , Shwethalyaung Buddha, Kambazathadi Golden Palace.

-          Dinner and overnight at Bago, Marina Hotel**.

-          Driving distance is 568 km,Driving time will be approximately 9hrs.

-          Ground situation is most of area is flat and dried,

D29/   14-Nov  BAGO – MYAWADDY – MEASOT – TAK (460 KMS) 8Hrs

-          Enjoy your breakfast at hotel, and then proceed 93 km drive to Kyaikhto. Hpa An (213 km) and Kawkayeik( 94km). On the way stop for lunch. Then drive to Myawaddy and arrive Myawaddy Border Town  carried out border formalities and cross to Myawaddy checkpoint.

-          Kyaikhto is a town in Mon State. Kyaikhto is a small town and popular for its wish fulfil Golden Rock Pagoda. If 14 km drive , can arrive base camp of Golden Rock. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda.

-           Driving distance is 371 km,Driving time will be approximately 6 hrs.,

-          Driving ground is half flat and rest of part is hill site

-          Arrive Myawaddy – Maesot border between Myanmar-Thailand for formalities

-          Convoy cross to Maesot and drive to Tak (80Kms)Dinner and overnight in Viengtak hotel

D30/   15-Nov TAK – SARABURI  (358 KMS) 6Hrs

-          Morning drive via Kamphengphet – NakornSawan with lunch en route

-          Continue to UthaiThanee – Singburi – Lopburi – Srakeow

-          Dinner and overnight at Aranyaprathet

D31/   16-Nov SARABURI – SIEM REAP – (380KMS) 7Hrs

-          Morning border formalities and cross to Poipet Cambodia border

-          Full day driving Srisophon – Battambang – Kampong Chaanang

-          Dinner and overnight in Phnom Penh 

D32/   17-Nov SIEM REAP – HO CHI MINH (540KMS)
